To the moon ...

Cold clear nights make rather detailed moon shots possible, even without a telescope.  A long telephoto and decent resolution camera can show you the craters and such.  Definitely use a tripod, manual exposure (or spot metering on the moon would work) and have fun.  It won't look like a telescope view, but fun anyway.

The moon is a lot brighter than you would think, so it is hard to find something to put in the frame unless you are in a city or etc. etc...   here are some great tips...

Marge and the moon

I was in the neighborhood of the Margaret Hunt-Hill Bridge this evening, which warranted some quick pics.


The occasion was a creative Circle Meetups gathering and presentation by Austin Mann.  To say he does good work is an understatement.

Most of the conversation revolved around storytelling and creative work for nonprofit and faith-based organizations, which is exactly where I want to be, so that was great.

The other thing that grabbed my interest was Mann's work on "motion fine art."  The idea of high definition screens as art displays is not new, but the idea of fine art with a time/motion element thrown in is intriguing.  The possibilities are quite endless.  Wouldn't have to be video, per se.  Digital mixed-media.  Or something.

Fall Moon

I like being able to see some detail in the moon's shadow areas.  Of course, you lose all detail in the 'lit' portion, but it is nice and moody.

Look out everyone, tomorrow is Supermoon!

Just in case we have clouds, I got this shot tonight. Looks like it might be time to get a telescope and camera converter to really get into the details. This is only at 200mm on the 1D, equiv to about 260mm on 35mm full frame.


Morning trip to the arboretum planned for tomorrow... that is always a fun, photogenic place to shoot.

Quick Pics - That Moon

We had a very cool moon with a halo tonight... here are a few photos.

The moon itself... I went out with a 40D and 70-200. I was pretty happy with the clarity, particularly for hand-holding...


But the really neat thing was the halo, so I grabbed the 24-70 and the tripod... plus some fun tweaking in Lightroom..
